Boyd & Co (1862 – 1934) Boyd & Co is one of many companies that show the strong links between Formosa and Amoy that existed in the late 19th century. The origins of Boyd and Company go back to the 1850s when Thomas Deas Boyd managed the interests of F. D. Syme & Co, which was owned by Francis Darby Syme. Syme was involved in the Coolie Trade, the shipment of indentured Fuchien labourers to work in foreign colonies and countries. It was said that the coolie from Fuchien possessed the best temperament to work long hard hours without complaint. F. D. Syme & Co shipped thousands of coolies from Amoy to Australia, Bourbon (Reunion), British Guiana, California, Havana, Hawaii, Mauritius and Peru between the years of 1845 and 1852. |

Thomas Deas Boyd (1831 - 1915) |
Thomas Deas Boyd was born at Cupar, Fife, on 1 March 1831. Although the 1851 Scottish Census shows him to be still in Scotland and working for the British Linen Bank, Thomas Deas Boyd must have come out to China shortly thereafter, for, in March 1856, he married Isabella Elder, a young lady from Fife, at Canton, China. From Canton the young couple moved to Amoy where the 1859 China Directory shows "Thos. D. Boyd & family" to be resident and working for F. D. Syme & Co. The 1861 China Directory also shows Thomas Deas Boyd to be a merchant working for for F. D. Syme & Co, with W. A. Sturrock and W. A. Cornabé as assistants. However, in March 1862, Francis Darby Syme sold his property at Amoy to Thomas Deas Boyd, so one can presume that Boyd took over the interests of Syme in that year. |

Boyd & Co was founded at Amoy in 1862 by Thomas Deas Boyd and William Alexander Sturrock, who were both previously employed by F D Syme & Co at the same port, and they also employed William Alexander Cornabé as an assistant. By 1872, Thomas Deas Boyd had replaced his junior partner with Robert Craig, and opened offices in Takow and in Taiwanfoo. In 1873 Boyd & Co had recruited Thomas George Harkness, and the following year David Moncrieff Wright, to work at Amoy. Boyd & Co's first offices in South Formosa in 1872 were run by their agent, George Mortimer Thompson, and traded in opium and sugar at Takow. The Takow godowns at Takow were located at Chihou near the pilots' station and still stand today. At Anping, Boyd & Co had reclaimed some beach land to the south of the Custom House and to the north of Julius Mannich & Co, all of which were located along the Ong-sain Sia Creek below the old Fort Zelandia ruins. However, in 1877, Boyd & Co sent David Moncrieff Wright to Taiwanfoo as their agent, which he remained until 1886, when he was replaced by Thomas George Harkness, who remained at Takow and Anping until 1889. |

Thereafter Boyd & Co closed their offices in South Formosa in 1889, leaving their Anping and Takow interests in the hands of Bain & Co, and removed to Tamsui to concentrate on the booming tea trade. David Moncrieff Wright remained in South Formosa after 1886, first joining Russell & Co until their collapse in 1891, and then trading in sugar to Japan under his own his own company of Wright & Co until 1894, Wright & Co continued on under Robert John Hastings and his son Harry Hastings until 1908. Robert Craig had resigned as junior partner in 1878, and was subsequently replaced by Edward Neilson Rose in 1881. By 1890 William Snell Orr, who had joined the firm in 1873 and married Thomas Deas Boyd's daughter in 1887, had become the senior partner of Boyd & Co, with Thomas Deas Boyd's elder son, Thomas Morgan Boyd, who had only joined the firm in 1886, as the junior partner. |

In 1900 Thomas Morgan Boyd ceased his interests in Boyd & Co, possibly due to family problems which culminated in the Divorce Courts of London. Thomas Morgan Boyd was replaced by Edward Thomas, who effectively controlled the firm after 1906, with William Snell Orr residing in London. Upon Edward Thomas' retirement in 1928, Robert Boyd Orr, the son of William Snell Orr and grandson of Thomas Deas Boyd, became the senior partner of Boyd & Co. |

[1] F D Syme & Co., under Mr Francis D Syme, shipped thousands of Coolies (indentured labourers) from Amoy to Australia, Havana, British Guiana, Peru, Mauritius, Bourbon (Reunion), Hawaii and California between 1845 and 1852. [2] Thomas Deas Boyd was born on 1 March 1831 at Cupar, Fife, the second son of James Boyd, a watchmaker; and died on 28 May 1915, aged 84 years, at Torryburn, Fife. He married Isabella Elder in March 1856 at Canton, China. They had four children: Thomas Morgan (b. c1862, Amoy), Charles James Lawrence (b. c1868, Amoy), Alice Isabella (b. c1866, Amoy), Lilian Mary and her twin Edith Margaret (both b. 24 July 1863 in Fife). He was a Freemason, belonging to the Ionic Lodge of Amoy, No 1781, E. C. [3] Sturrock born c.1835; died at Torquay, England on 8 February 1877, aged 42. [4] W A Cornabé was born in Calcutta about 1836. In 1852 Cornabé is given as a Clerk in Syme, Muir and Company at Amoy, and Francis Darby Syme (4 December 1818-1871) as a Partner. After leaving Boyd & Co he formed his own company of Cornabé & Co. at Chefoo. He married Isabella White Farmer in 1872 in Fife, Scotland,, and they had six known children. He returned to England about 1877 and died c1911. [5] E. N. Rose returned from Amoy to Edinburgh, Scotland. He died at Dresden, Germany, on 2 June 1899. [6] After leaving Boyd & Co in about 1874, Thompson formed a partnership with W H Taylor in South Formosa which was dissolved in 1876. [7] W S Orr was born on 1 November 1850. He married Edith Margaret Boyd, the twin eldest daughter of Thomas Deas Boyd and brother of Thomas Morgan Boyd. in Edinburgh on 17 February 1877; their children included Robert Boyd Orr. He died in March 1922 at Chertsey, Surrey. [8] Thomas Covil was born about 1848 at Greenwich, Kent. He was a Freemason, belonging to the Ionic Lodge of Amoy, No 1781, E. C. Thomas Covil died at Boulogne, France, in 1928 aged 80. [9] T G Harkness was born on 30 October 1847 at Dumfries, Dumfries-shire. His father was a lawyer, and, after his death and that of his mother and elder brother by 1874, Harkness left for China. He spent the years 1884 to 1888 in South Formosa, but shortly thereafter returned to Britain and married Augusta Helena Erskine at London in 1898. Harkness died on 20 December 1906 at Kingston, Greater London. [10] David Moncrieff Wright was born on 26 August 1849 and christened at Singapore, his father was Commander George Tod Wright of the Honourable East India Company. Wright died on 2 January 1895 at St Andrews, Fife, Scotland. [11] George Porteous Deas was born at Kirkcaldy, Fife, in 1856. He is presumed to be a relative of Thomas Deas Boyd. [12] Thomas Morgan Boyd was ,the eldest son of Thomas Deas Boyd, was born at Amoy about 1862. The 1881 UK Census shows T M Boyd as 'Qualifying for tea inspector' and living in Chelsea, London with his parents and sisters. T M Boyd married Isabella Richardson at Swatow in about 1888 and they had three known children: Eunice Mabel Boyd (b. c1893 in Amoy); James Lawrence Boyd (b. 18 August 1891 at Amoy) and Thomas Cecil Boyd (b. c1897 at Amoy). T M Morgan retired from Boyd & Co in 1900; however, he divorced his wife Isabella Richardson in 1901. Thomas Morgan Boyd died at Bournemouth in 1925. [13] David Rankine Orr (born in 1866) was the youngest brother of William Snell Orr, who had come out to Amoy to work for Boyd & Co. He drowned whilst out boating at Amoy in May 1890. [14] A F Gardiner was born in c1865, the youngest son of Colonel Thomas George Gardiner. He died at Daitotei, North Formosa, on 24 July 1909 and was buried in the Tamsui Foreign Cemetery. [15] Edward Thomas replaced Thomas Morgan Boyd as a partner in Boyd & Co in 1901. [16] Fergus Graham Kell was born c1873; he died at Amoy 18 October 1915, aged 42 years. He was buried at Tamsui Cemetery. [17] John Sharp Fenwick was born on 2 April 1878 at Logie in Fife. He married Doris Violet Arthur at Amoy on 29 May 1914. He died on 29 April 1919 at Amoy. [18] Arthur Frederick Gardiner, died 24 July 1909, aged 44, at Formosa. Buried at Tamsui. [19] W R Harvey was born at Walworth, London, in 1885, the only son of William Henry and Emily Ann Harvey of Herne Hill, London. He died of wounds in World War I as Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery on 23 September 1917 near the French-Belgian border, aged 31. [20] Robert Boyd Orr was born about 1899 at Amoy, the only son of William Snell Orr and Edith Margaret Boyd. He died in April 1946 in Surrey, England. [21] Harold Leonard Keen was born in Middlesex, England, in 1904. He was a Witness to Robert Boyd Orr's Will drawn up in 1938 at Taihoku, Formosa. |
